How to Practise Speaking Italian — Even If You Have No One to Talk To

Speaking is a physical skill: your mouth needs reps. Five practical methods, from talking to yourself to your first language exchange.

Many learners can read and understand far more than they can say. That gap is normal — speaking simply needs its own practice. The methods below need nothing but your voice and a phone, and you can start today.

  • Narrate your day out loud: Adesso preparo il caffè. Poi esco. Short, simple sentences are perfect.
  • Shadowing: play a short clip of Italian audio and repeat each sentence immediately, copying the rhythm and melody, not just the words.
  • Record yourself for one minute on a topic, then listen back and note one thing to improve.
  • Prepare scripts for real situations — ordering, asking directions, introducing yourself — and rehearse them until they come out without thinking.
  • Find a language exchange partner: an Italian speaker who wants to practise your language. Split the time half and half.

Three lifesaver phrases

Può ripetere, per favore? Più piano, per favore. Come si dice … in italiano?

Could you repeat that, please? More slowly, please. How do you say … in Italian?

With these three, you can keep almost any conversation going instead of freezing.

Aim for a little every day rather than a lot once a week: five minutes of speaking out loud daily builds confidence faster than an hour on Sunday. And accept the awkward phase — every fluent speaker went through it.
