Once Upon a Time — Narrating

Weave imperfetto and passato prossimo together to tell a complete short story.

Every good story alternates: imperfetto paints the scene, passato prossimo moves the plot forward. Here's a complete mini-story showing the weave.

Era una sera d'estate. Faceva caldo e le strade erano piene di gente. Improvvisamente, ho sentito la mia canzone preferita e sono entrato in un bar.

It was a summer evening. It was hot and the streets were full of people. Suddenly, I heard my favorite song and I went into a bar.

Notice the pattern: three imperfetto verbs paint the scene (era, faceva, erano), then two passato prossimo verbs move the action (ho sentito, sono entrato).

  • improvvisamente — suddenly
  • a un certo punto — at a certain point
  • così — so / like that
