Everything you've learned so far has been the indicativo — the mood for facts. The congiuntivo (subjunctive) is for opinion, doubt, emotion, and desire. The trigger is almost always a verb like penso, credo, or spero followed by che.
Penso che sia una buona idea.
sia, not è — because after penso che, you're stating an opinion, not a guaranteed fact.
Regular endings
- -are → -i: che io parli, che tu parli, che lui/lei parli
- -ere/-ire → -a: che io venda / dorma
- Warning: io/tu/lui/lei all look identical — context and pronouns matter more here than usual.
Essere and avere are irregular and worth memorizing directly: che io sia / abbia. You'll use both constantly.
