Bureaucratic Italian, Decoded

Survive Italian paperwork — the dense, formal register of official documents.

Italian bureaucracy has its own dialect: long nominalized sentences, passive voice, and a vocabulary that barely overlaps with spoken Italian. If you plan to live in Italy — renting, residency, university enrollment — this is unavoidable.

Common patterns

  • si prega di + infinitive — 'please [do]', formal instructions
  • ai sensi di — 'pursuant to' (a law/article)
  • la presente — 'this document/letter' (referring to itself)
  • si comunica che — 'it is hereby communicated that'

Si prega di presentarsi con un documento di identità valido.

Please present yourself with a valid ID document.
