My Name Is… — Mi Chiamo

Introduce yourself and ask others their name — the phrase you'll use in every first conversation.

'Mi chiamo' literally means 'I call myself' — it's the standard way to give your name in Italian. You'll also hear the simpler 'sono' (I am) plus your name.

Ciao! Mi chiamo Sara. E tu, come ti chiami?

Hi! My name is Sara. And you, what's your name?

Piacere di conoscerti!

Nice to meet you!

Say this right after learning someone's name — it's expected, not optional.

Formal vs informal 'you'

  • Come ti chiami? — informal, for peers
  • Come si chiama? — formal, for elders or strangers in formal settings
