How to Roll Your R in Italian

A step-by-step method for the trilled Italian R — even if you've never rolled an R in your life.

The Italian R is a trill: the tip of the tongue vibrates against the ridge behind your top teeth. Persian speakers have an advantage — the Persian R is close. English speakers usually need to retrain the tongue position, and it is entirely learnable.

The three-step drill

  • Say 'butter' fast, American-style — that tongue tap is the seed of the trill.
  • Add air pressure: 'tr' as in treno, keeping the tongue relaxed.
  • Stretch it: terra, ferro, birra — hold the vibration a beat longer each day.

Tre tigri contro tre tigri.

Three tigers versus three tigers — a classic Italian tongue twister.

Single R vs double R matters: caro means dear, carro means cart. The double R holds the trill visibly longer. Italians hear the difference instantly — and with two weeks of daily drills, so will you.
