Asking questions in Italian is pleasantly simple: there is no 'do/does' to add and the word order usually stays the same — the question word comes first, and your voice rises at the end. Learn these words and you can start real conversations.
- chi? — who? Chi è?
- che cosa? / cosa? / che? — what? Cosa fai?
- dove? — where? Dove abiti?
- quando? — when? Quando parti?
- come? — how? Come ti chiami?
- perché? — why? (also means 'because') Perché studi l'italiano? — Perché amo l'Italia.
- quanto/quanta/quanti/quante? — how much/how many? Agrees with the noun: Quanti anni hai?
- quale/quali? — which? Quale preferisci?
Dove abiti? — A Bologna. — E quanto tempo resti?
Two spelling traps
- Qual è is written WITHOUT an apostrophe: Qual è il tuo nome? (not qual'è).
- Dove and come DO shorten before è: Dov'è la stazione? Com'è la pizza?
